High-altitude sushi? East by Southwest of Durango does it best!

It’s hard to imagine eating sushi in a small mountain town like Durango, Colorado, miles from any ocean. But rest assured, East by Southwest prides itself on careful preparation of fresh ingredients and beautiful presentation of their many offerings.
Modern Asian décor and sushi in Durango, Colorado
Specializing in sushi, steak, and Pacific Rim fusion, East by Southwest blends an upscale urban décor with a casual ambiance.
East by Southwest is family friendly, like most Durango restaurants. If you’re looking for an intimate sushi dinner with your honey, the coziest place to sit is in a booth in a smaller room separated from the main dining room by an interesting “water wall.”
East by Southwest offers a variety of sushi rolls and dinner entrees
We visited this Durango restaurant on a busy Friday evening recently, and started our meal with an order of edamame, which came to the table hot and perfectly salted. We moved on to the spicy East by Southwest Roll, the New York New York, the High Roller, and the Thai Veggie Roll. All were delicious. The sashimi we ordered was fresh, and the accompanying wasabi sauce added just the right kick.
Sadly, we didn’t have room for Hand Grenades, my all-time favorite combination of shrimp and scallop broiled with dynamite sauce and sichimi, sweet soy and sliced orange. When you eat at East by Southwest, don’t miss this Durango favorite!
Not a sushi lover? No problem. The menu at this popular Durango restaurant is quite varied – people who don’t like sushi will easily find something delicious to order at East by Southwest.
Friendly service at East by Southwest
On rare occasion my friends in Durango complain about long waits, loud music, and inconsistent service. Every time I’ve eaten at East by Southwest, I’ve been seated immediately and served by friendly, helpful, and attentive staff. They might be right about the music, though. I would prefer they turned down the volume on the music just a bit.
Happy Hour bargains on sushi at East by Southwest in Durango
Durango restaurants can be pricey and East by Southwest is no exception. One way around this is to make sure you get there in time for Happy Hour (5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.). You’ll be seated more quickly and you’ll love the lower prices they charge for food and drinks.
And speaking of Happy Hour…
I have to say that the highly recommended pomegranate mojitos at East by Southwest are mighty tasty – and potent. After just one mojito, I discovered that chopsticks require manual coordination at a level difficult to maintain after drinking one of these sneaky little devils.
I say, enjoy your sushi and steaks at East by Southwest in Durango, but be careful of drinks sporting paper umbrellas. Or, just order another mojito and ask for a fork!
