Five Star Burgers – a contender for best burger in Albuquerque

In spite of a few rough moments at the outset of our meal last Saturday night, I’m convinced that Five Star Burgers is definitely a contender for the best burger in Albuquerque award.
Looking for the best burger in Albuquerque
Five Star Burgers didn’t look promising at first – generic shopping center location and outdoor seating overlooking the parking lot and a hulking Wells Fargo ATM kiosk. And the décor was a little unusual for a burger place. It almost looked like the previous tenant was an Asian restaurant — dark angular furniture, open seating, and no cozy booths to sink into.
Shortly after we were seated with our menus, the waitress asked us repeatedly if we were ready to order. Feeling rushed, I was getting a little grouchy.
Then I spotted a tempting milkshake being served to the people sitting next to us. Things were looking up! I noticed on the menu that they would make sandwiches with gluten-free bread. Another good sign! And with a name like Five Star Burgers, they surely serve the best burgers in Albuquerque, right?
Great food at Five Star Burgers in Albuquerque
We got down to business and ordered the day’s burger special — popper burgers with jalapenos and cream cheese — and a green chile chicken sandwich with Monterey jack cheese on a gluten-free bun. The food took a while to arrive, but it was worth the wait! When the green chile chicken sandwich was served, I could see the bun wasn’t the gluten free version I had asked for. A friendly and apologetic hostess took it right back to the kitchen and returned quickly with the correct item.
And I have to say, Five Star Burgers’ green chile chicken sandwich tasted great. The green chile mayonnaise had just the perfect amount of heat – very warm, but not too hot. The accompanying dish of coleslaw was small, with just the right amount of creaminess.
A contender for the best burger in Albuquerque
The popper burgers could easily qualify for the best burger in Albuquerque. They were perfectly cooked and flavorful, with the cream cheese tempering the heat of the jalapeno peppers quite nicely. The milkshake was creamy and tasty, too, and could have served two or more people.
The fries were served in a fun little freestanding metal basket just like the ones used in the deep frying process. They were crispy and delicious – and we dipped them in the green chile mayonnaise for even more flavor.
